Do you like Neutral Milk Hotel? Their early work was a little too lo-fi for my tastes, but when On Avery Island came out in ‘96, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a loud, garage sound, and a fresh twist of interluding guitar pieces that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Thom York, but I think Mangum has a far deeper, more unusual grasp on music. In ‘98, Jeff released this, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is “Holland, 1945”, a song so catchy, most people probably don’t listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it’s not just about a deep love for Anne Frank, and the importance of humanity, it’s also a personal statement about Magnum itself. Hey Paul!

Christiane F. photographed by Ilse Ruppert in her room in Hamburg (1983).

Christiane F., a onetime heroin-addicted teen prostitute, a junkie from the age of 12,  was put in the spotlight in her early teens during the late `70s, after a series of interviews about her life and West Berlin`s drug scene, which led in a top-selling book and a film (Christiane F. – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”) based on her memoirs.

Her intriguing story, as well as her great looks instantly turned her into a media darling and a kind of controversial heroin-chic celebrity.

Along Alexander Hacke, her boyfriend at the time and member of the German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten, they recorded two albums and also appeared in a film.
